Plums in the Crate by Peter Wirth, a 2007 chalk still life

Chalk Still Lifes, 2007

Seven chalk still lifes from 2007, all in the same two sizes. Fruit in a dark bowl, in a wire basket, in a crate; a single red apple; a cup between a pear and an apple. Peter Wirth drew them one after another on sheets of 15 × 22 cm, laying chalk over grounds he had first scribbled dense, so the paper shows through everywhere.

Because the originals are small, we offer these sheets in two sizes only — 8 × 10 and 11 × 14 inches in the United States, 20 × 25 and 30 × 40 cm in Germany. On the 8 × 10 inch sheet the drawing appears at very nearly its original size. Any larger than 11 × 14 and the chalk on the paper would show more than the drawing does. We do not upscale.

Matching sizes also mean the seven hang together: three, six or all seven in a plain grid, 2 inches apart. Every sheet carries a white border with the printed signature, and its own certificate.
