Peter Wirth set most of his flowers against a dark ground — black, night blue, wine, slate. The bloom is lit as if from inside it, and the ground gives way behind. These are the works where that is the whole picture.

They hang well together and they hang well alone, and they are the easiest of his works to place: a dark ground takes a light wall without competing with it.
