Veiled Chairs, 1998–99
Between 1998 and 1999 Peter Wirth painted the same subject again and again: a chair under a cloth, set before a ground of two or three fields of colour. The cloth changes — sea green, red, ultramarine, almost white — and so does the way it falls: gathered at the seat, thrown across, dropping straight. Sometimes a second chair stands beside the first. All eight paintings are acrylic on cotton canvas, each 120 × 100 cm; in the artist's catalogue of works they stand together as one group.
What the cloth hides, the pictures do not say, and we do not guess.
The originals were newly photographed for this edition. The files carry every size offered here — up to 18 × 24 inches — at close to twice the resolution we require for printing. Every sheet is an open-edition pigment print after the original, on Hahnemühle German Etching, with a white border and a printed facsimile of the signature; each ships with its own certificate.
